What sensors are for in a fleet

A GPS device on its own knows where a vehicle is and how it is moving. Everything else - how much fuel it has, what the temperature is in the cargo area, who is behind the wheel, how loaded the vehicle is - comes from sensors. They turn location tracking into real control over what is happening inside the vehicle.

Sensors that measure fuel

Fuel probes measure the level in the tank and make it possible to separate real consumption from loss. A fuel flow meter measures how much fuel the engine actually uses. The first approach is better for detecting theft, the second for precise consumption analysis.

Sensors that protect cargo

Temperature sensors log the temperature in the cargo area throughout the transport, which is a requirement for handling perishable goods and the basis for proving the cold chain was maintained.

Sensors that read the vehicle itself

A CAN BUS adapter reads data directly from the vehicle's electronics - engine RPM, working hours, faults and the consumption the vehicle calculates on its own. Digital sensors track states such as doors opening or the operation of auxiliary equipment.

Sensors that measure cargo and surroundings

Axle load sensors show how loaded the vehicle is and help avoid overloading and fines. Cameras give you a picture of what the numbers cannot, and Bluetooth & BLE allow sensors to be connected wirelessly, without extra cabling.

How to choose a sensor

Sensors are not chosen from a list of features but by the problem you are trying to solve. In practice it comes down to a few typical situations:

  • Fuel disappears with no explanation - a tank probe, since it is the only one that measures the real level.
  • Cargo has to stay at a set temperature - a temperature sensor with a log covering the whole transport.
  • You don't know how much a machine actually works - CAN BUS or a working-hours sensor, since mileage means nothing here.
  • Vehicles get overloaded - axle load sensors.
  • You need proof of what happened - cameras together with sensor data.

All sensors connect to the same GPS device, and their data is shown together with location, so an event is always seen in context - where the vehicle was and what was happening at that moment.

Frequently asked questions about sensors

Can sensors be added to an existing system?

Yes. Sensors connect to the GPS device already in the vehicle, so the system is upgraded without replacing existing equipment. That is why most customers start with basic tracking and add sensors as the need arises.

Do sensors work on heavy machinery?

Yes. With heavy machinery, sensors are often more useful than with vehicles, since operation is measured in hours and consumption, not distance traveled.

Does installing sensors require a special procedure?

It depends on the sensor. A fuel probe requires installation in the tank and calibration for the specific vehicle, while other sensors connect more simply. In every case installation should be done by a trained technician, since it determines the accuracy of the data.

How much does adding sensors cost?

Sensors are add-on modules alongside basic GPS tracking, priced from 8 € per vehicle per month. You can test the system free for 15 days - see the pricing details.
