How to measure consumption: the full-tank method

The calculator is only as accurate as the data you enter, and the most reliable way to get that data without any equipment is the full-tank method:

  1. Fill the tank completely and note the odometer reading.
  2. Drive as you normally would, for at least a few hundred kilometers.
  3. Fill up to full again and note how many liters it took.
  4. That amount is the fuel actually consumed over the distance driven - enter both numbers above.

A calculation based on pump receipts has one weakness: it shows how much fuel was paid for, not how much was consumed while driving. If some fuel is siphoned out of the tank, on paper that looks the same as higher consumption. We wrote about this in detail in the article how to prevent fuel theft in your fleet.

Approximate consumption values

Vehicle typeApproximate consumption
Passenger car5 - 8 l/100km
Van (delivery)8 - 12 l/100km
Truck up to 12 t18 - 25 l/100km
Semi-trailer truck (international transport)25 - 35 l/100km

These ranges are approximate and depend on the load, terrain and driving style. In practice it matters more to track deviation from your own average than to compare with someone else's numbers: the same vehicle on the same route consumes differently with different drivers, and a sudden jump in consumption is always a signal that something needs checking. In detail by vehicle type, empty and loaded trucks, idling and AdBlue: how much fuel a truck uses per 100 km.

What increases consumption the most

  • Driving style - harsh acceleration and braking can add over 10% (eco-driving).
  • Engine idling - an hour of idling burns 2 to 4 liters, while mileage stays put.
  • Tire pressure - underinflated tires increase rolling resistance.
  • Overloading - every extra load is paid for in consumption.
  • Fuel siphoning - it is not consumption, but in the records it shows up the same as consumption.

Estimate or measurement

This calculator gives an estimate based on the data you enter yourself. For a fleet of multiple vehicles, the estimate quickly becomes rough, because nobody has time to carefully log liters and kilometers for every vehicle. That is when consumption gets measured automatically: a fuel level sensor tracks the level directly inside the tank and logs every refuel and every sudden drop, a flow meter measures the fuel that actually passed through the engine, and a fuel consumption tracking system ties all of that to the distance driven per vehicle and per driver.

Frequently asked questions

How is fuel consumption per 100 km calculated?

Liters consumed divided by the distance driven, then multiplied by 100. For example: 46 liters over 520 km gives 8.85 l/100km.

How do I measure my vehicle's consumption most accurately?

With the full-tank method described above. For a fleet, a fuel level sensor measures the level directly inside the tank, with no manual record-keeping.

What is normal truck fuel consumption?

A semi-trailer truck in international transport roughly consumes 25 to 35 l/100km, depending on the load, terrain and driver. Deviation from your own average matters more than comparing with others.

Why is consumption higher than it should be?

Most often: harsh driving, engine idling, underinflated tires, overloading or irregular servicing. If driving cannot explain the numbers, also check the possibility of fuel siphoning.

How much fuel do I need for 100, 200 or 500 km?

Multiply the consumption per 100 km by the number of hundreds of kilometres. A vehicle using 7 l/100km burns 14 litres over 200 km and 35 litres over 500 km. A truck at 30 l/100km burns 150 litres over 500 km. For the cost of the trip, multiply the litres by the fuel price per litre.

How is fuel cost per kilometre calculated?

Multiply the consumption per 100 km by the fuel price and divide by 100. For example, 8 l/100km at 200 RSD per litre gives 8 x 200 / 100 = 16 RSD per kilometre. The calculator also works out the monthly cost when you enter the monthly mileage and the number of vehicles.

Stop estimating - start measuring

A probe in the tank and consumption tracking by vehicle and driver show where your fuel is really going. You can test the system free for 15 days on your own vehicles.
