The Hungarian HU-GO toll is a key system for charging for road use for all cargo vehicles above 3.5 tonnes of total permitted mass. This electronic toll collection system lets drivers travel through Hungary without stopping, while automated collection processes help avoid mistakes and unnecessary fines. The PratiMe system offers integration with the HU-GO system to achieve maximum efficiency and safety in transport.

How does the HU-GO toll collection system work?

HU-GO is an electronic toll collection system in Hungary intended for cargo vehicles. PratiMe GPS customers do not need to buy an additional toll device - the GPS device that PratiMe uses to track vehicles is integrated with the HU-GO portal, which automatically transmits road-use data and executes toll collection based on the route traveled. The PratiMe device connects to your HU-GO user account, through which transactions are managed. Drivers must make sure there are sufficient funds on the account before setting off, in order to avoid fines.

Automating this system enables simple and fast toll payment, which removes the need for manually buying tickets and reduces the chance of errors.

Two ways to pay: on-board unit or route ticket

HU-GO can be paid in two ways, and the choice depends on how often you drive through Hungary.

1. On-board unit (OBU) with a prepaid account. The device uses GPS to recognize the section you are driving on by itself and deducts the amount from your HU-GO account. There is no manual purchase before each trip. This is the solution for vehicles that regularly pass through Hungary.

2. Route ticket, bought in advance. Valid for one exact route and one exact vehicle, and must be bought before departure. If the vehicle deviates from the route the ticket was bought for, the ticket no longer covers the trip. Suitable for occasional crossings.

There is also a third way: a device you already have in the vehicle for tracking can be registered for data reporting. For users of the PratiMe system this means there is no need to buy a separate toll device.

Ways to pay the HU-GO toll

What determines the price of the HU-GO toll

HU-GO is not charged as a flat fee like a vignette, but per kilometer traveled. Because of this the same route does not cost the same for every vehicle. Four things affect the amount:

That is why accurate vehicle data entry matters just as much as the account balance. A declared category that does not match the actual vehicle is treated as an unpaid toll, even when there is money on the account.

What changes from May 1, 2026

Hungary has changed the rules of electronic toll collection for vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes. Two changes are practically important for carriers from Serbia:

  • The route ticket is valid for 300 minutes. The deadline has been extended, so a delay at loading or a hold-up at the border does not automatically mean the ticket expired before you even started driving the section.
  • A way to correct an incorrect category has been introduced. If the vehicle was declared in the wrong tariff or environmental category, the fine can be avoided by paying the difference and submitting proof to the competent authority. This can be used once within 60 days.

The list of agricultural products eligible for a free route ticket has also been expanded, with the corresponding certificate.

Fines and deadlines

Enforcement is automatic, through cameras and control gantries, so an uncovered pass is recorded even when no one stops the vehicle. The fine depends on the vehicle category and the violation, and in practice it often exceeds 280,000 HUF.

The deadline for paying the fine is 60 days. If it is not paid within that time, the amount is increased fourfold. That is the most expensive part of the whole story, and it most often happens because the notice arrives late or at the wrong address.

Benefits of automating HU-GO toll collection through Hungary

Integrating the HU-GO system with the PratiMe system provides a range of benefits for vehicle management and toll cost tracking. Some of the main benefits include:

Benefits of automating HU-GO toll collection
  • Automation of the collection process - Collection happens automatically via GPS data, reducing administrative costs and the time needed for manual tracking.
  • Real-time tracking - The PratiMe system enables real-time vehicle tracking, providing accurate information on the route and toll usage.
  • Avoiding fines - The automated system reduces the chance of mistakes that can lead to fines, such as forgetting to buy a toll or taking the wrong route.

Tips for avoiding fines in the HU-GO system

Fines for improper use of the HU-GO system can be very high, but there are a few tips on how to avoid them:

  • Check your account balance regularly - If there are not enough funds on the account, collection will not go through, which can lead to fines.
  • Enter vehicle data accurately - Entering incorrect data, such as the number of axles or the vehicle's environmental category, can result in fines.
  • It matters that the vehicle stays on roads it is permitted to use, specifically those allowed for its load capacity and dimensions.
Tips for avoiding fines in the HU-GO system

PratiMe cooperates with companies from Hungary that can process VAT refunds on HU-GO tolls and on fuel purchased in Hungary.

Integration with the HU-GO system through the PratiMe platform lets you automate the entire toll collection process in Hungary. This not only reduces administrative costs, it also helps you avoid fines caused by mistakes. The PratiMe system gives you full control over your vehicles and enables a worry-free crossing through Hungary.

Frequently asked questions about the HU-GO toll

Who has to pay the HU-GO toll?

HU-GO applies to motor vehicles with a total mass of 3.5 tonnes or more, on Hungarian motorways, expressways and main roads. Lighter vehicles are covered by the time-based e-vignette, which is a separate system.

What is the difference between an on-board unit and a route ticket?

The on-board unit uses GPS to recognize the section you are driving on and deducts the amount from your prepaid HU-GO account, so there is no need to buy anything before each trip. A route ticket is bought in advance and is valid for one exact route and one exact vehicle.

What happens if the vehicle deviates from the route the ticket was bought for?

A route ticket covers only the route it was issued for. If the vehicle switches to a different section, that stretch is not covered and is treated as an unpaid toll, regardless of the fact that a ticket exists.

What changes from May 1, 2026?

The validity of the route ticket has been extended to 300 minutes. A way to avoid a fine for an incorrectly declared tariff or environmental category has also been introduced: pay the difference and submit proof, once within 60 days.

How much are the fines and within what deadline are they paid?

The amount depends on the vehicle category and the violation, and in practice it often exceeds 280,000 HUF. The payment deadline is 60 days, and if it is missed, the amount is increased fourfold.

Is it enough for the account to have funds on it?

No. Besides the funds on the account, the vehicle data must be accurate. An incorrect number of axles or environmental category is treated as an unpaid toll even when there is money on the account.
